Homegrown- Fremont

If you are out and about shopping with your friends or family in Fremont I highly suggest making a pit stop to Homegrown to refuel. This place is delicious, pretty and has a great philosophy. I tried my friends butternut squash soup (she was the lucky devil that took the last of it) which was really yummy. She had a great sandwich as well and I had a really good arugula and beat salad. I can't wait to check out more of this place!

New York Cupcakes in Bellevue

The first CakeSpy visit to New York Cupcakes in Westlake Center in Seattle was not a sweet one. The display case was kind of sad, the employee was texting the entire time, and the cupcakes themselves were...well, kind of a bummer.

But since then something magical happened: they changed ownership (incidentally, location too), and the transformation is dramatic.

I was lucky enough to visit the revamped New York Cupcakes today with my friend Carrie (proprietress of Bella Cupcake Couture, a CakeSpy sponsor and all around cool company!), and I have to say, I was very impressed. Walking in to the shop, the warmth strikes you immediately: decorated with cute artwork by Everyday is a Holiday and bright pink walls and a classic checkerboard floors, you immediately sense that this is a happy place.

But rarely are sweet shops able to coast on good looks alone, so how about those cupcakes?

We picked up five just to be sure:

The "Manhattan Margarita" (pictured top);

The "Grand Central S'more";

The "Boston Cream Cutie Pie";

and a mini "Royal Red Velvet" (also pictured top) for good measure.

What can I say other than that I was very, very impressed? The cake was perfectly moist, with a perfectly tender crumb--especially on the vanilla cake. The texture was light-ish, but assertively buttery enough to make its presence known. The frosting too was quite buttery, but whipped so expertly that it practically seemed to melt in your mouth. The Margarita Cupcake in particular impressed me, with a touch of tart lime flavor beautifully balanced by a rich, buttery and just ever-so-slightly salty buttercream. I did not want this cupcake to end.

The verdict? In my mind, New York Cupcakes has not only redeemed itself, but I'd now consider it a worthy destination.

Seattle Book Fest

The Seattle Book Fest is being resurrected!

The fair will feature more than 70 local authors, including poets and writers of fiction, nonfiction, mystery, romance, fantasy, and children's books. In addition, the fair will showcase over 50 area bookstores, nonprofits, and small but influential publishers as exhibitors. There is also a long list of panels, workshops and special events including a spelling bee, SCRABBLE contests, bookbinding demo, and a How-to-Write-a-Novel-in-a-Month workshop.

Of special note Seattle's Matthew Porter will be reading from his Monkey World Children's poems book at Sunday, October 25th - 1:30 - 2 pm.

Cheap and Delicious Eats

One thing I love, is cheap food. I don't think Seattle has enough of it and if you don't have time, you even have less options. But they are out there so here are a few of my favorites:

In the International District:
Szechuan Noodle Bowl:
This place doesn't look much from the inside or out but don't judge this book by it's cover. This place is GOOD! They make all the noodle by hand, often while you are eating. My favorite is the spinach and tofu dumplings along with an order of scallion pancakes. They are located at 420 8th Ave S right next to one of my favorite restaurants, Green Leaf. Both of these places are really good, it will just depend on what you are in the mood for and how much money you want to spend but they won't disappoint.

I could spend hours in Uwajimaya which is why it's good they have a food court. Save room for dessert because you will want to try a cream puff from Beard Papa's. And don't forget to go to the bookstore, Kinokuniya...they have an amazing selection of Japanese craft books. You can't go in there without spending some money so be warned. AND now, there is a Daiso right next door which is maybe the most amazing "dollar store" ever. Everything is $1.50 unless marked otherwise. It's AMAZING!

Downtown:

Mexican Grocery
One place we often go to for lunch while working is The Mexican Grocery. The ladies that work there are so sweet and the food is really authentic and delicious. Their tamales are so good don't be surprised if you come back for a bag of them to go! I often go here before a party to get salsa and chips. It's perfect for those without much money but still like to eat well! Located at 1914 Pike Pl (between Stewart St & Virginia St)

Another place we often get lunch downtown is Mae Phim which is really good Thai restaurant where you can eat cheaply and feel like you got a great deal!

Other Places to Eat in the Downtown and ID Area Worth Mentioning:

I was a vegetarian for 9 years and one day I just wanted some meat. I slowly started eating meat again going back and forth with the idea but once I had Salumi the deal was sealed. I wanted to eat meat because I wanted to be able to eat at Salumi's if I wanted to. Unfortunately they have such limited hours that it's hard to get there but if you are on vacation, standing in line for a 1/2 hour won't seem like such a big deal. It's worth the wait, I swear! If you are having a hard time finding it as it is located in a strange location, just look for the Police Museum and a line.

If you need a treat, look no further than The Dahlia Bakery. Amazing cookies, coconut bites, cupcakes and more. Right around the corner is Serious Pie. A great place for pizza.

An amazing independent book store

So lots of people like to quote some survey that found out Seattle is the best read cities in the US. Not sure how they know this but we do have a lot of great book stores. Spine and Crown is a gem of a find. Lots of art books, quality writers and not much of the run of the mill paperbacks which is ideal. The book store packs a lot in it's space and Chris the owner is super knowledgable and is happy to order titles for you. He also likes to chat a lot too - I own Bluebottle next door and I know if I go over to ask a simple question we'll stand talking for at least 15 mintues.

Confederacy of Dunces play

Confederacy of Dunces is a book a lot of people say "Either you love it or you hate it". I am in love category - I think it hilarious and just all around good stuff. Book-It repertory theater in Seattle has put together a theater production of it. My hubbie and I went to see it last night and we were not disappointed. They got all the highlights in there and even though it was a three hour production I only looked at my watch in the last 10 minutes.

I highly recommend this as a great night out. If you sign up on Book-It's twitter page they do announcements for last minute deals as normally a ticket will run you $30. Or if you are under 30 $20.00!

How could we have written this blog for so long without including Archie McPhee's? This place is a Seattle institution - toys and lots of great weird stuff. It's just super fun to wander and then finally pick the piece that you just can't do without. On my most recent visit mine was the Starving Turtle plates below - why they spoke to me who knows!

Around since 1993 with a few different locations it now resides in Wallingford. I think I'll just include some photos as it is one of those places is better explained with photos! Oh Wallingford is a good neighborhood to wander too!

Chapel Happy Hour Martini's

Coconut, Lavender, Pomegranate - all martinis that are offered at Chapel! Fancy martinis, happy hour (only $5 from 5 - 8 pm) , and outdoor seating not right next to the road. This is why I like going to this place. But I always bail by 8pm because after it starts to get a bit clubby. Another bit that is not a huge draw for me but might be for others -The Chapel was built in the early 1920s inside the Butterworth's Mortuary. So it is a very lovely space with an interesting ambiance.

My Favorite Cookie in Seattle: The Chubby from Monorail Espresso

Say hello to my favorite cookie in Seattle.

Its name is Chubby, and it lives not at a bakery but at Monorail Espresso downtown (one of the oldest espresso stands in the city). They're made in small batches by hand by Mr. Espresso himself, Chuck Beek.

They're slightly bigger than a golf ball, and taste-wise they fall somewhere, delectably, between a chocolate chip cookie and a shortbread cookie: slightly crunchy/sandy on the outside, and dense and chewy on the inside. "Perfect" may not be the best word to describe them, but it's the first one that comes to mind.

If you are what you eat, this is the kind of chubby to which I aspire.

Jim Henson

I grew up with The Muppets. Myself and my whole family loved the show. In fact, I loved it so much that at one point I told my mom that I wanted to change my middle name to Miss Piggy. This past weekend my parents were in town visiting so I decided to take my dad to the Jim Henson exhibit at the empsfm for a belated Father's Day gift. As a plush fan, a toy store owner, and a Muppet fan I was overjoyed to see this exhibit. I wish it included more because once I was done with it all I was longing to see so much more. BUT I am not complaining at all. Any day you can go and visit the world of Jim Henson is a day worth enjoying. After the exhibit Jim Henson became my hero even more, if that is at all possible. Don't miss this show! It's almost over and you'll be kicking yourself if you don't go see it. AND your ticket includes admission into the science fiction part and music part too. Spend the whole day!

Tot-Thali Delicious: The Dessert Thali at Poppy, Capitol Hill

The informal definition of "crush" is "one who is the object of an infatuation." But it's so much more than that--it's that feeling you get in the presence of your crush. It consumes you. It gives you an impulse to ride your bike by their house...just in case they happen to be around.

And I'm crushing really hard on the Dessert Thali at Seattle restaurant Poppy; it's the creation of Dana Cree, whom I suspect is some sort of pastry and confectionery genius.

What is a Dessert Thali, you may be wondering? Well, in case you missed its recent shout-out as the Best Dessert Date in Seattle, here's the article's well-put overview:

A large tray arrives at your table loaded up with one of Cree's main desserts (say, her warm orange-rhubarb shortcake or the, haha, hot date cake), plus a scoop of ice cream (mango lassi, sassafras, neapolitan) and a host of bite-sized things, including candied nuts, fruit gelées, chocolate truffles, and an exquisite nutter-butter square with a crackly caramel topping.

Oh, it's a sexy dessert tray all right.

On the day we went, we personalized ours with the following:

First, the "Rocky Rose" ice cream, which was kind of a fancy take on Rocky Road, with a thick fudge topping and homemade marshmallows;

Then, a crumble consisting of roasted cherries topped with almond streusel and honey-lavender ice cream. This was an absolute standout: assembling it just moments before being served, apparently, is one of the secrets--each ingredient maintains its own flavor and texture "identity"--coming together beautifully without becoming soupy.

Various other little bites were served alongside the main attractions: little lemon cream puffs; cumin cashews; apricot pâtes de fruits (translation: fancy fruit jellies); and some absolutely tantalizing Nutter butter squares, which were crispy and sweet and salty all at once, andwith a crowning glory of thick caramel, completely addictive.

..and, we were treated to a sneak preview of something Dana is working on for an upcoming event. Not going to give away too much, but it was good.

Honestly, I couldn't imagine a more delightful way to serve dessert. With a sampler like this, you still have some choice in the matter--but it also gives you an opportunity to try some tiny bites of unexpected desserts; there's also a certain drama that comes with having this platter full of sweets glistening like little jewels being delivered to your table. It's one of those dishes that all the other diners tend to turn to see as it goes by.

What a Turon-On: A Delicious Find at Delite Bakery

Nope, this is not an eggroll. It's even better, because it's dessert.

Say hello to the turon, my most recent discovery at Delite Bakery in Beacon Hill. What is a turon (or turrón, as I've seen it elsewhere), exactly? Well, according to Wikipedia,

Though many varieties exist, a typical turrón is plantain and jackfruit wrapped in a springroll wrapper, dipped in brown sugar, then fried. This somewhat resembles banana spring rolls. These are also known as banana fritters.

Delite's version was made with banana, and had the most delicious slightly crackly, carmelly-sticky crust which gave way to the sweet taste of banana. The banana's texture was perfect: yielding, but not too mushy. A satisfying treat, and surprisingly for something fried, not too heavy-- all in all, perfect for a hot day and definitely worth seeking out if you find yourself in the Beacon Hill area.

Mater Matrix Mother and Medium

Tommorrow night is the culmination of a project by Seattle based Mandy Greer. Mandy is an artists work I have admired for years but it just doesn't fit in our pop art gallery but that's ok as I get to go other places to see her amazing work. Matthew, my hubbie, and I went to see the installation the other day and it was lovely and I think i'll try to sneek out of the gallery early tommorrow to go see the preformance.

Mater Matrix Mother and Medium is a process-based temporary public art installation by Seattle-based installation artist Mandy Greer (that’s me).

This new work is commissioned by Seattle Public Utilities 1% for Art Funds, and administered by Seattle Office of Arts and Cultural Affairs, as a way to celebrate and interpret the splendor of Seattle’s urban creeks and encourage community involvement in the stewardship of our essential watersheds.

The River of Mater Matrix Mother and Medium will be created on site at Camp Long, as I integrate all the fiber parts created over these many months into one form based on the topography and structure of the trees. The river will remain in the trees until July 31st, 2009, with the potential for longer to be determined later.

Mater Matrix Mother and Medium will culminate with a site-specific performance by Seattle-based and internationally-recognized choreographer and dancer Zoe Scofield. Come join in this one-time experience on July 16th, 2009 at 6:30 pm at the pond at Camp Long in West Seattle, 5200 35th Ave. SW.

Rosemary's Babka: A Devilishly Delicious Mini Treat

The other day while wandering around Ballard, I happened to walk into Great Harvest Bread and in doing so, unwittingly submitted to my destiny: The Mini Chocolate Babka.

Baked in a muffin tin, this two-pronged treat is a mini monstrosity, so ugly it's sort of cute. Because of its small size, the chocolate-to-pastry ratio is upped dramatically, making it amazingly buttery and rich; in spite of said richness, it's amazingly how quickly and easily it manages to get in your belly.

As the sign in the shop said, this mini version of a classic holiday bread is "too good to save for once a year"--and I tend to agree. Even if it is the devil in disguise.

When CakeSpy buddy Megan tipped us off about Snacks!, a new bodega in Ballard opened by Dante (of Dante's Inferno hot dog cart fame), we knew we had to hit it up. But why would Cake Gumshoes want to check out a bodega in an alley behind a bar, you ask?

Three words: Sweet. Hot. Dogs.

No, seriously. Per myballard.com, Dante has "created a 'Chilly Dog' that is a hot dog bun with soft serve ice cream, his idea of an ice cream sandwich (served with a spork.)" OK, so there's not an actual hot dog in it. But still, it's a fun idea...sort of like a choco taco, but with a hot dog bun instead of a chocolate tortilla.

Naturally, we had to head over immediately upon hearing Megan's suggestion. Unfortunately they'd already closed for the night, but they were kind enough to invite us in for a look and even gave us some soft-serve ice cream, which they have in vanilla, chocolate and a combo swirl--sure, it was no Chilly dog, but it sure was delicious.

Blitz: Capitol Hill's New Arts Walk Kickoff Thursday June 11

On Thursday, June 11, Capitol Hill is launching Blitz - a new monthly arts walk showcasing the businesses and creative cultures that thrive on the Hill. Produced by the Capitol Hill Chamber of Commerce (CHCC), the walk includes a range of arts including visual art and music, performance art and even culinary arts. Blitz will keep the neighborhood hopping from 5:00 - 8:00 pm next week and the event will continue on the second Thursday of each month.

No gallery? No problem! Put your art on a stick and join the parade!

To help celebrate the June 11 launch, Blitz is featuring an all-invited ‘Art-on-a-Stick Parade.’ The parade begins at the Broadway Performance Hall Plaza at Seattle Central Community College, where double-dutch jump rope team, On the Double, will kick off the parade. Artists and members of the community are encouraged to join in and present their talent to the public. The parade will follow along a route of businesses participating in Blitz and will end at performance space/tea house, Electric Tea Garden (1402 E. Pike Street), where the artwork will be displayed. The Electric Tea Garden is also hosting the Blitz after-party, featuring DJ’s and dancing.

Dana utilizes maps as her canvas with needlepoint thread as her drawing medium. She works on small scale-tiny pieces as she feels they are intimate experiences between the work and the viewer. Her imagery is dominated by tiny things in nature that have a big impact.

Moxie:
Moxie is an experimental and self-taught artist. She communicates through fiber alchemy, reveling in the transformation of soft, comforting wool fiber into art objects that are solid to the touch. Her work is needle felted and uses no water, knitting, sewing, stuffing, embroidery or glue. She sculpts using only her hands, wool fiber, industrial felting needles and time.

Jenna Colby is a self taught artist who has always been creative through different mediums, but decided to focus on painting three years ago. Originally from Ohio, Jenna has traveled and lived in both Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, but has called Seattle home since 1999. Growing up in a small town Colby was always fascinated with cities and has been influenced by her travels and the people she has met and observed. “I make it a point to take note and assign a story to the passer by, giving each moment in time purpose and creating color.” After developing and beginning to show her work, Jenna came into contact with the work of artists like Mark Ryden and Yoshimoto Nara. Thinking back, she says, “Their work really moved me. It made me nervous, giddy . . . I’m not sure if there is a word for it. Even her exhibit title—It’s Not Real: Dream Diaries, Secret Messages, and Other Clues from Far Far Away—lets you know you’re in for something special when you view her work. Delicate, ethereal, sweet, Jenna’s paintings capture a curious personality in a brief moment of time ready to take you on an internal voyage. Her take on it is this: “A random passerby on a random day in a random moment has a story to tell, a history, a set of beliefs and intentions, all happening, all true and real, but unnoticed by most.” It is these moments that Jenna freezes in her colorful yet airy portraits of characters who are twiggy in form but bursting with emotion, sensation, and moodiness. Paper Heart

This past weekend I attended my first SIFF film, Paper Heart. I am not a tween or for that matter "young" but I totally love Michael Cera. Ever since Arrested Development I just love him. I don't care if he is typecast, he's subtle, quirky and adorable. So without reading anything about this film, I got a ticket.

Paper Heart is an adorable and quirky story about Charlyne Yi traveling the country to understand love, a subject she is not entirely comfortable with. Along the way her own interests are peaked after meeting, her real life boyfriend, Michael Cera, at a party. From there you watch while Charlyne documents her "love findings" while experimenting herself with love. What results is a sweet story that draws a thin line between what is written and what is improvised. I didn't think too much about what was staged and what was not, I thoroughly enjoyed this film.

Curio Confections in the University District

I always get excited when I hear about a new bakery opening--but when I heard that Curio Confections was being opened by a Trophy Cupcakes alum, I knew it was going to be fantastic. Maria Friedman has struck out on her own with a new bakery in the University district (55th and University), specializing in non-cupcake but still very delicious items.

When I went on opening day, they were still rushing about getting items out of the oven and into the cases, but I arrived right on time to pick up some mini tartlets. Usually I gravitate more toward cake than toward pie, but I have to say that these were good. I had the strawberry-rhubarb which was creamy and rich yet refreshing with its fruit garnish. The crust was the best part though: it was soft and lightly crumbly, almost like a buttery, slightly more solid shortbread. Yum.

TACOS!

For the past week I have had a ton of tacos. I used to live in SF where you could find good tacos all over the place. So when I got here it was weird to not have at least a decent amount of places serving good Mexican food. Well it's really exciting to have a few new places to find delicious and cheap tacos.

First, I finally tried Rancho Bravo in the old KFC building across from Oddfellows. If you are a vegetarian your choices are limited (one taco) and it's kinda bland. BUT if you eat meat, there are tons of options and are super delicious. I really enjoyed the mole chicken as did my sister. I am totally going there again. Not only was it really good but it was super cheap! $2 tacos! There's nothing fancy here but who needs fancy when you got delicious?

Speaking of $2 tacos, I also tried Tacos Gringos whom seem to cater to the later crowd, they don't open until 8. Unlike Rancho Bravo, their vegetarian taco was really flavorful. I am really into this whole $2 taco deal. I think it's probably pretty recession proof.

I also tried The Saint. They are not $2 but are really really good. If you can make it for happy hour they have a great happy hour menu AND really good margaritas which the other two do not offer.

I am glad that we finally have some good options here! Viva La Taco?

Bel Mar in Ballard

I went to a birthday party the other night at the Bel Mar in Ballard and I thought it was a perfect spot for a party! I am always on the lookout for venues that can be rented for the night and do not consist of needing 100 people and a huge deposit. At the Bel Mar you can rent out the back area of the upstairs bar area. There is a comfy seating area and the hosts of this party had a table of snacks catered by the Bel Mar but they brought in their own cake. The also served champagne and then everyone bought drinks as they wished. They have some amazing mojitos there! They make me think and feel summer!! The Bel Mar is also lovely in that it has exposed bricks and wood beams and large windows to let in lots of light. I have to say as we were leaving it was getting a tad bit too swanky barish but we had been in our own little area and left just as it was beginning to get too loud. Great for surprise birthday parties, bachelor/bachelorette parties and I could see a daytime baby shower here too.

Half Pint Ice Cream

This Sunday it was hot and sunny and what do you think about when it's hot and sunny out? BBQ's, beach and ice cream! I went over to my local farmer's market where I tried the amazingly delicious ice cream from Half Pint Ice Cream. Oh. My. God. This ice cream had me longing for more, lot's more. With interesting flavors and in-season ingredients, you'll be going back weekly to see what's new. I had a few minutes to talk with owner, Cle, about her ice cream and where you can find her. Here is what I learned.

There are 4 flavors at each market made with what's in-season at that time. Some of her most popular flavors are:
*Twisted Coconut
*Chili Chocolate
*Mojito Sorbet (YES PLEASE)
*Vanilla Chai

She also uses Victrola Coffee for her coffee flavored ice cream.

I had a combo of Vanilla Chai and Chili Chocolate. I thought it was the perfect combination of sweet and spicy. The Vanilla Chai was really fresh tasting if that is a word that can be used to describe ice cream. It had the perfect mix of chai spices and wasn't too sweet or too spicy. Then the Chili Chocolate was like no other ice cream I have ever tried. A perfect amount of chocolate and spice with a surprise kick that sets in a few seconds after swallowing. It wasn't an overpowering spice however, just the right punch you would be looking for when ordering a chili chocolate ice cream. Together this pair went perfect together. PERFECT!

Kebab on 2nd ave

Being a local merchant on 2nd ave for almost 5 years now, I have seen a lot of changes on this street. Fortunately I can say that MOST of these things have been good changes. This street has come along way and in this past year it seems to really be thriving. I am so happy that there is a few new restaurants a hop and skip away from Schmancy.

Today I reached a point of starvation. I couldn't wait for my dinner, I needed to eat now. I forgot lunch and was trying to hold off but I was getting spacey and shaking. This is no way to be good at customer service. Luckily, local lady Mary, came in and told me about the newest addition to the street, Kebab. The few words I needed to hear; cheap, food, good, were said and I grabbed my purse and kicked her out. We walked over and I was immediately salivating. I am SO glad this place is so close and even happier that it was delicious. I got the kebab because I had to. BUT there are lot's of super cheap eats there for vegetarians and not. And they are brave enough to stay open for the local and not so local drunks (they are open until 2:30am!). Go now and go often. We need more gems around here. Welcome to the neighborhood!

Cheese Festival

This weekend is the Seattle Cheese Festival. With the gorgeous weather we are having it is PACKED down there. If you can squeeze in, there is some amazing cheese to be had with some great prices. A little tip I got, go Sunday at 10:00am so you can actually get close enough to actually eat the cheese. Currently it is so crowded you can barely get close to it, let alone close enough to buy it. Have fun!

Get your SIFF on

I have lived here for 10 years and have only attended SIFF once. It's embarrassing. So this year I jumped at the chance to purchase some tickets so I wouldn't forget. Even if you only go to one, SIFF is so fun. Last time I attended I saw the hilarious film, Eagle vs. Shark. Director, Taika Cohen talked after the film and was completely charming. We were totally crushed out on him and the star of the film, Jemaine Clement by the end of the night.

The Yellow Leaf Cupcake Co.

Andrea and I had the pleasure of checking out the new cupcake shop in Belltown, The Yellow Leaf Cupcake Co. What a treat (actually many treats) we had! We first got to sit down and chat with one of Yellow Leaf's owners, Mike, about the space, how they came up with the name and their fondness for Seattle. As recent transplants, they inhabit the excitement of newbies. Ahhh newbies. They moved out here last October after they had visited numerous times and fell in love the Pacific Northwest (what's not to love?). Coming from LA, Seattle probably seems a lot different, but those differences they embraced. They had both been looking to make a life change and start doing something they were really excited about and having a job they were also really excited about. Tony,co-owner, has been an avid baker for a long time and saw the trend towards cupcakes. Both had worked in a hospital and they just decided to finally make the plunge and move out here to open up shop. The name came to them after a drive through the Cascades during the fall when all the leaves were yellow. Many pictures were taken which can be found lining the walls of their soon-to-be-open establishment.

After our lovely introduction it was time to taste the cake. And many cakes were tasted. Let's start with the standards. We first tried the red velvet cupcake that immediately made me think of my momma. When I was a kid my mom tended to make carrot cake for our birthdays with; what I believe to be the BEST cream cheese frosting in town. The red velvet cupcake had the same feel and taste of my mom's cream cheese frosting so we were off to a great start. Aside from red velvet you will most likely be able to find the other typical standard cupcakes such as a vanilla and chocolate. Even though they will have the standards for the less adventurous, don't be surprised if you find a slight variation that makes the typical...not so typical any more.

As an avid cupcake eater what was more exciting for me was trying the more unusual flavors. The tomato soup cupcake was the most adventurous cupcake I have had to date and it was delicious. Considered to some, the Depression Cupcake, this cupcake should get a lot of buzz with our current economic state. I never really tasted the tomato although Andrea says she did. What I tasted more of was the amazing spices paired with the delicious chocolate Italian buttercream. No matter what the economic state is, I think this cupcake will be a success with the rich as well as the poor.

My favorite flavor of the day was the almond cupcake. If you don't like almond, stay away but I am in the other category. I love almond flavored anything. The cake was a perfect moist cake along with a perfect allotment of almond Italian buttercream rolled on the sides in almonds. I am still thinking about that cupcake. I am glad that it's a little bit of a walk or I would really fear my diet would take an automatic plunge.

BUT we can't forget about Andrea's favorite, the coconut cupcake. Andrea, what made this cupcake stand out for you?

Coconut was my favorite because it seemed so light and spring-timeish. It had little purple sugar crystals on top which made me think of all the liutle purple flowers I have been seeing around lately and it was just a reallly really yummy treat!

And then another favorite flavor of mine is lemon. The lemon cupcake had the perfect amount of sweet and tartness that any lemon lover would enjoy. AND there were crushed lemon tarts on the top! OH yes, it's true.

So after digesting my sugar high, I can't wait to be a regular at the Yellow Leaf. I am so happy they have moved into Belltown to add more to this growing neighborhood. You too can become a regular starting this Friday at 7:30am. They will also serve muffins to their morning worker bees and will specialize in pairing fancy teas with your choice of cake. We can't wait to see what else they have up their sleeve.

*Buy one of their already inexpensive tumblers (made from recycled materials) and get .40 cents off all your drinks (when u bring it in of course)
*You will notice a yellow heart adorning a cupcake from time to time, that flavor will be a child's choice favorite of which an amount of it's proceeds will go to the child's charity of choice.
*The cool cork walls were purchased by Re-Store in Seattle where Mike was able to actually talk with the man who made it back in 1973!

Penguins have arrived at the zoo

The Seattle zoo is pretty amazing. There seems to be lots of green space and the exhibits give the animals plenty of space. The newest addition to the zoo is the Penguin exhibit. It has a clear glass panel in several locations so you can see them swimming and the kiddies don't need to be lifted up to see the action. If there is just a touch of rain hit up the zoo the animals are out and the crowds are gone.

Bluebottle is really close to the Baguette Box so I have ordered from them LOTS but I still love their Crispy Tofu Baguette. First the tofu is organic which is always good, not a deal breaker for me just kind of icing on the cake. The tofu is baised in coconut juice and comes topped with Aiolo, pickled daikon carrots, red onions and I always go for the opitional avocado. Probably the best part is the baguette itself. You can have all the best ingredident inside but if the bread is stale it is a no go! They keep it simple in decor and have about 7 baguette options, plus a few sides and wine. An easy stop in place or they do to go and delivery as well!

I hadn't had a day off in 12 days and needed to just have some fun. And fun was had on Sunday! First, I met my friend for coffee at the quaint Pettiroso. I really love this place and wish it was a tad bit closer to my home so I could go there more often. Needless to say, every time I go, it's a treat. Then we played tennis at Cal Anderson park. I was a bit intimidated by this idea as I kinda suck at tennis and thought I would just have a lot of onlookers thinking I was a goof ball. But it was still early and not full of hipsters. We were pretty thirsty after so we stopped in Oddfellows for ice tea. This place is just so so pretty with afternoon light. THEN we went to the new Molly Moon's for delicious ice cream. I LOVE this place. It's so good and makes me giddy. I finally tried the salted caramel and admit it's really good. BUT not my favorite. Next time I am going for the ginger. I look forward to this day. After more walking around we got 1/2 a sandwich at The Honey Hole which I always kind of forget about but always enjoy. So this day got an A++. I needed an A++ kinda day!

Every once in awhile it is good to get out of the city. My husband and I moved to Seattle in 1999 and every year we have gone to the tulip festival in LaConner, WA. We love bringing home bunches and bunches of tulips direct from the fields. I love this festival as it is basically just a walk through tulip fields. It is super laid back and not over commercialized.

Check out the Tulip Festival website they have a map that will show you all the fields you can hit up and then there is alway one formal garden we go to called Roozengaarde. It is a $4 admission but they have a display of every type of tulip you can imagine. Runs April 1 - 30 so go soon before they cut them!

Honestly, I feel like I hardly have to say anything: the picture says it all. This chocolate peanut butter bar from Hoffman's Fine Pastries in Kirkland channels a holy trinity of awesome, falling somewhere between fudge, bar cookie and peanut butter cup. It was dense and completely delicious, and it cost less than a dollar.

Sweet Cakes: Delicious Cupcakes in Kirkland

The other day a friend and I took a trek over to the Eastside to try some of the bakeries over there. One of the ones I was most curious about was Sweet Cakes, a cupcake shop that opened about 4 months ago.

Walking into this bakery, I was really pleased to see that they had more than just cupcakes--as much as I love cupcakes, I do adore other sweets too, and they had a nice variety of baked goods, including yummy-looking bars, cookies, and morning pastries. But of course the cupcakes were front and center--after all, they are the prettiest of all sweets!

We picked up a couple of mini cakes ($1.50 each), including the red velvet, chocolate mint, vanilla cake with strawberry frosting and chocolate-frosted vanilla cake.

We didn't eat all of them (after devouring a couple of them, we gave the rest to our friend Nicole, who owns Immortal Dog), but we did like what we tasted. The red velvet in particular was very nice. They weren't really "fancy" cupcakes, but upscale-homey. The frosting was nice and buttery-smooth, and the cake was very moist. Overall, I'd say Kirkland is lucky to have Sweet Cakes. It's definitely worth a stop if you happen to find yourself on the Eastside!

I LOVE Project Runway. As a fashion designer drop out I love watching this show for all the various awesomeness it entails. First, the designs some of those folks come up with is mind blowing awesome and then mind blowing terrible. It's kinda scary when they think it's the coolest, most inventive thing in the world but it just translates more to a big poop sac. BUT they still think it's awesome. Hmmmm.

Vermillion Art Gallery and Bar

Tonight I am heading over to Vermillion for an event. I just love this place and am super happy that my monthly events are held here as I always look forward to hanging out there for the night.

Vermillion is an art gallery/bar on Capitol Hill that opened in August of 2007. The focus of the artwork is on Narrative and Pop art in most mediums. The shows are always really well put together and it's great to go out from a drink at night but get to see some art as well. I figure it makes the night all that more interesting!

The front part of the space is a the gallery section which you walk through to head to the bar area at the back. The bar serves wines and beers and they offer a nice menu of small dishes. Vermillion has a cozy atmosphere with exposued brick walls and definately not the snobby space one thinks of in relation to an art gallery/wine bar!

It makes for a great place to stop off while checking out Capitol Hill or for a evening out looking for a cozy place to chat with friends.

Crepes in Capitol Hill

I get a lot of folks asking for good places to eat that are close by us at Bluebottle in Capitol Hill. Luckily, I get to first ask what are you in the mood for since we do have a lot of good places nearby? But I also always throw in the advice of 611 Supreme

This is my favorite place in Seattle and maybe the world - I know a tall order but crepes seem so fancy and are filling! I am vegetarian so get a bit tired of pasta and veggie sandwiches. My favorite here is a a mushroom, spinanch, tomatoes and guyere cheese buckwheat crepe and I always get one of their specialities drinks.

And I am pretty picky about atmosphere as well but I love the brick walls here and the mix of fancy but relaxed.

This is an easy walk from downtown and a good stop if checking out the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle.

The Friends of The Seattle Public Library Book Sale

I have never been but I always really want to go. Yet again, I can't. One of these days....

The Friends holds two major book sales every year, in Spring and Fall. At each sale, over 200,000 books and other items are offered to the general public. Proceeds go to The Seattle Public Library.

Carrot Cake Cookie Sandwiches From Cafe Javasti

Sometimes, a baked good comes along that is just so awesome it makes me want to faint.

The carrot cake cookie sandwich, with cream cheese frosting filling, from Cafe Javasti, is one such baked good. If a whoopie pie and carrot cake had a baby, this is pretty much what it would look and taste like, I think--that is to say, completely delicious. I didn't try their coffee, so I can't make any suggestions as far as that goes--but when it comes to this cookie sandwich, I'm smitten.

Victrola Coffee

I will first admit that I am a coffee whore. I am o.k. with that and it's just how I roll. Depending on my final destination, my coffee of choice for the day is made. Today I thought I was meeting some folks at Victrola. It is not on my direct route to work so I don't go as often as I should. My favorite thing about Victrola is their homemade cardamom syrup that I like in my latte. I am a fan of this flavor so I was so excited to see this flavor as an option...I haven't seen it anywhere else! They also do "cuppings" (see site for more) every Wed. at 11:00. That sounds like a great activity for a visitor in town whom wants to know what the hype is with Seattle coffee. They also rotate their art, have the roasters visible and have a great staff. If you are in Capital Hill or now Beacon Hill, you can try for yourself what all the hype is about. Coffee in Seattle is really just so so good. And PRETTY!

The Best Croissant in Seattle?

This croissant comes to you direct from Bakery Nouveau in West Seattle. Now, you've probably heard of this bakery--it's won all sorts of accolades, always seems to show up on "best of" lists--and it doesn't hurt that the proprietor, William Leaman, is also a past winner of the Coupe de monde de la Boulangerie (the World Cup of Baking. Yup, it exists).

But is this actually the best croissant in Seattle? Now, to be completely honest, croissant alone has never really gotten me going--I always feel like it needs something else (and therefore, I prefer a pain au chocolat or some elaborate almond-cherry filled flaky pastry). However, my dear Mr. CakeSpy is a connoisseur of this delicious, buttery and flaky pastry, and when he tried it the other day he proclaimed it the best in the Emerald City.

Justin Hillgrove
Justin Hillgrove grew up in Snohomish, Washington and has been enjoying artistic expression since he was old enough to color on the walls. Mostly self taught, he has since enjoyed many years of freelance illustration and design, working on everything from collectible card games to bobble heads. Justin's "Imps and Monsters" series is his creative outlet. The creatures depicted and the satyrical situations they find themselves in are reflections of moments which Justin finds amusing, many of which are inspired by his children.

Mike Lewis
After receiving his BFA in Illustration from Syracuse University in NY, Mike traveled to Seattle to begin his art career. He worked for several years on the west coast, showing in galleries like Lunar Boy Gallery, Gallery 110, Gallery 070 and the Hive Gallery. Mike now lives in the foothills of the White Mountains in New Hampshire, where he continues to show his illustrative paintings across the country.

Kobo In Capitol Hill

I have gotten pretty picky now when I shop because I get to see so many amazing artists work everyday at Bluebottle, through Etsy and through all the blogs I read but I still love going out to a store and seeing a collection put together by a store owner. I generally shop small independent shops so it's really like seeing a curator put together a show of all the stuff they really dig. I am always super flattered when customers say they love our store and ask if I pick out all the products. I think you can really tell when a store has the vision of one individual buyer, you can see their tastes and style in their shop. This is definitely the case at KOBO

KOBO which translates from Japanese as artists workspace showcases work that has a Japanese "feel" although it is definitely not the case that everything is from Japan. Most of the the work I really like is from artists creating work with a Japanese influence. The is a main venue for artist Ken Taya. He also showcases his work here at Bluebottle but has a few additional pieces at KOBO like this one.

KOBO creates a line of this tshirt in different colors which I have always loved and gave to my husband Matthew a few years ago.

I always go to the Capitol hill space as it is close but I really need to get to their second location which is much larger and features regular art shows. Go check them out!

The Most Frightening Easter Cakes Ever?

While the garish pastel mound of frosted lump covered with coconut is almost bad enough, it's really the mask that clinches the deal. Holy Cannoli: They Actually Exist in Seattle!

One of the first things I noticed when I moved to Seattle a few years ago was the distinct lack of Italian bakeries. Moving from New York, I had become accustomed to a certain quality of life which included mass consumption of lobster tails (the pastry, not the seafood), anginetti cookies and--most importantly--cannoli. Now this is not to say that Seattle doesn't have its share of awesome bakeries--but most of them gravitate toward Nordic and French styles of baking rather than Italian.

But recently, I was tipped off that I might be able to score a cannoli at Remo Borracchini on Rainier.

Sure enough, they had cannoli--in chocolate cream as well as the traditional ricotta with fruit bits--as well as cookies by the pound, Hot Cross buns, and more Italian treats. The fact that they looked at me blankly when I asked if they had zeppole may give them slight demerits, but I was pretty thrilled to find a place to score cannoli. They may not be the finest I've ever had, but it's comforting to know they exist, and it did inspire me to get artistic and make a "CannoLisa Loeb".

So You Think You Can Dance

Today has been a day full of leggings, makeup and dancing hopefuls trying out for the Fox show, So You Think You Can Dance. When I opened Schmancy I thought it would be really fun to see some famous folks working at the theater. That dream quickly died when I realized it wasn't really all that glamorous. It mainly consists of breathing in exhaust all day while BIG tour buses park right outside my door, leaving me with a headache and lot's of frustration as they are blocking all view of my store.

There have been times where it is exciting like the second time Neko Case came by just to say "hi". Ummm that was pretty sweet and feel good. Thurston Moore came in with his daughter and bought something but that was more intimidating than anything else. I never felt so flustered at my own store before.

Needless to say, this whole So You Think You Can Dance is a different breed I have never experienced before. I guess there is a first for everything. Break a leg you tiny dancers.

Circus Contraption

Last night my intern, Amy, and I went to go see Circus Contraption. She had been talking to a co-worker who has done some photography for them and I remember that I had not seen their newest show so we decided to go! I love this show and I have always kind of felt it was one of the hip things in Seattle that I was in on from the very beginning. I was introduced to Circus Contraption back in 2000 when they were preforming in one of the old airplane hangers out at Magunson Park on Sand Point Way. Matthew had been showing a series of sideshow performers paintings at a small gallery and someone from the circus asked if he would display them in the lobby for Circus Contraption. So he did and we got introduced to an amazing show!

Circus Contraption is not your typical circus it has it's very own band, the acts are surreal and there is lots of let's say cheekiness. The show is about a family owned circus showcasing all it's glamour and glitz while a sense of iminent destruction looms not only for the circus but for the world itself.

This is a really amazing group of talented folks and sadly I have heard that this will be their last show so go see it before it does all end!

The first time I stepped into Oddfellows Cafe it was one of those snow days when I decided opening Schmancy wasn't worth it. There were ski's propped up against the door and I was the happiest clam in Seattle. On that day, I decided Oddfellows was my new favorite spot in Seattle. Unfortunately since that magic making day, my experiences have made me not such a huge fan. The decor is beautiful and the attention to detail is what gets you "at hello". Once you settle in, the problems start to show their face and here are a few.

After my drinking excursion last weekend, I realized that place is WAY too loud. I had already decided that you can only go there with one or two other people. Once you hit four, expect to only have a conversation with the person directly in front of you or next to you. Well last weekend there was 3 and I had a hard time having a naturally flowing conversation as there was always one of us feeling left out. Having to always say "what" or "I can't hear you" got annoying way too fast and made for a lot of awkward silences. So now I have decided it's basically only good for two people max.

Then there is the food. I haven't had everything on the menu and was really happy to see that the fries changed from $6 to $4. When I was in my excited-about-Oddfellows stage, I took a few friends there while they were visiting from NYC. We ordered the fries and "special (disappointing) sauce". I dipped my fry and immediately a taste so distinct came to mind not good for "table talk". So I just explained that the sauce reminded me of something that I wouldn't share while we were eating. A few seconds later my friend says, "this stuff tastes like throw up". That summed it all. So at $6 or $4, that sauce needs to be changed or just give us ketchup. I mean, they are only fries after all.

Then there was my BLT experience. I still consider myself a meat dabbler so I didn't know if leaving bacon super fatty was the fancy way but, either way, I wasn't into it and found myself peeling it all off leaving very little B left to enjoy. A few of my friends have gotten some of the salads which they enjoy but I have heard, on several occasions, that they couldn't really believe they were paying x for the size. The breakfast's I had in the past were the least disappointing thing on the menu. I am not sure why they can't cook the same things offered in the day at night. Anyone?

Sadly I have also had one too many moments in there where they seem to be having problems. From the fryer to no prep, it's always something.

I am sure the food and prices can improve but I am not sure what they can do with the acoustics. I still want to root for this place because I simply enjoy looking around. BUT I have learned my lesson and will only be going if I am either with one other person for drinks only OR just there for breakfast. Unless some more magic can happen I have bowed down to these facts and will learn to live with them.
